Frequent Occurrence of Infections
Infants typically suffer from infections 6 to 8 times per year. Schoolchildren are affected somewhat less frequently, averaging 3 to 5 infections per year. Adults experience infections even less often, averaging 1 to 2 times per year.
Cause
A weakened immune system can have various causes. In children, the still-developing immune system is often a reason for frequent infections. Increased exposure to pathogens, such as during the first visit to daycare or school, can also play a role. The immune system is often still weakened during the recovery period after an illness. Underlying or autoimmune diseases, as well as a one-sided diet, can further impair immune defense.
When Should You See a Doctor?
You should see a doctor if you frequently suffer from persistent infections that require treatment. If autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis are present, it is also important to seek medical advice on how to strengthen the immune system.
