What Are Hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are knot-like expansions of blood vessels in the rectum. They occur when the natural tissue cushion around the lower bowel is enlarged and causes problems. This tissue cushion usually serves an important purpose by sealing the bowel from the outside world. However, when the blood vessels are enlarged, it is referred to as hemorrhoidal disease, although in common language, it is often simply referred to as hemorrhoids.
The main symptoms of hemorrhoidal disease are bleeding in the anal area, itching, pain during bowel movements, and oozing. These symptoms can be very uncomfortable and significantly affect the quality of life. It is important to see a doctor if these symptoms occur to determine the exact cause and initiate appropriate treatment.
Causes of Hemorrhoids
- Straining during bowel movements: For example, due to constipation.
- Connective tissue weakness: Can lead to increased susceptibility.
- Pregnancy: The pressure on the pelvic veins increases.
When Should You See a Doctor for Hemorrhoids?
- Suspicion of hemorrhoids: A doctor should always be consulted first to rule out other diseases.
- Severe pain or persistent bleeding: Should be medically evaluated.
