What is Diarrhoea?
Diarrhoea, also known as diarrhoea, refers to frequent, watery bowel movements, often accompanied by an increased stool volume and frequency. Diarrhoea can occur in an acute form, which appears suddenly and lasts only a few days, or in a chronic form, which persists for weeks.
Causes
The causes of diarrhoea are diverse:
• Gastrointestinal infections caused by bacteria (e.g. Salmonella) or viruses (e.g. Norovirus)
• Unfamiliar food, especially when travelling
• Food intolerances such as lactose intolerance
• Stress and nervous tension
• Side effects of certain medications
• Underlying conditions such as ulcerative colitis or irritable bowel syndrome
When Should You See a Doctor for Diarrhoea?
A doctor's visit is recommended if:
• No improvement occurs after 48 hours.
• Fever develops.
• Blood or mucus is present in the stool.
• Severe pain occurs.
• Alternating diarrhoea and constipation occur.
• Recurring diarrhoea is present.
• Diarrhoea occurs after taking antibiotics.
• Liver dysfunction or more serious conditions are present.
• Weight loss occurs.
Important: Children, pregnant women, and elderly individuals should always see a doctor in case of diarrhoea!
